Google Ads vs Meta Ads for B2B & High-Ticket: Where to Spend First

When founders and marketing leads approach me with a fresh paid-media budget, the first question is almost always the same: “Should we put our budget into Google Ads or Meta first?”

Most agencies default to their personal comfort zone — PPC specialists recommend Google Search, while creative agencies push Facebook and Instagram. But choosing the wrong platform first burns cash fast and destroys confidence in paid media.

Here is the exact decision framework I use across seven figures of managed spend to determine where every ad dollar should go first.

1. The Intent Gap: Search Demand vs. Latent Demand

The fundamental distinction between Google and Meta is intent:

  • Google Ads captures existing intent. The prospect is actively typing a problem, service, or competitor name into a search box. They are in-market right now.
  • Meta Ads (Facebook & Instagram) generates latent demand. The prospect is scrolling their feed. Your visual hook and message must interrupt them, educate them, and convince them to care.

If your product or service has high search volume and a defined buyer intent (e.g., enterprise software, emergency services, specific agency partners), Google Search is your highest-efficiency starting channel. If nobody is searching for your category yet, Google Ads will return zero impressions or burn budget on broad, irrelevant search terms.

2. The Unit Economics Check

Before launching a single campaign on either network, calculate your break-even Cost Per Acquisition (CPA):

  • High ACV / High-Ticket ($3K – $50K+ deals): Google Search usually wins on conversion rate, even if clicks cost $15–$50. You only need a fraction of searchers to book a call to generate a 5x+ ROAS.
  • Low ACV / High-Volume ($50 – $300 orders): High Google CPCs can crush margins. Meta’s lower Cost Per Mille (CPM) and advanced lookalike/broad algorithms allow you to acquire customers at scale at a fraction of the click cost.

3. The Hybrid Playbook: The 70/30 Scale Rule

Once accounts reach profitable baseline performance, the best-performing accounts never run either network in isolation. They run a full-funnel hybrid engine:

  1. Bottom of Funnel (Google Search): Capture 100% of high-intent transactional search queries.
  2. Middle & Top of Funnel (Meta Prospecting): Build awareness and prime the market with problem-focused video creative.
  3. Cross-Network Retargeting: When a prospect clicks a Google ad but leaves without converting, retarget them on Instagram and Facebook with case studies and client testimonials.

The Verdict: Where to Start

If your monthly budget is under $5,000, do not split your budget 50/50. Concentrate your entire budget where the shortest path to cash is:

Start with Google Search if people already search for what you do. Start with Meta if your offer requires visual demonstration or audience education to trigger interest.
